Best Time to Visit the Kenyan Coast: A Season-by-Season Guide

Kenya's coast doesn't run on the same rhythm as its inland safari circuit, so "best time to visit" really depends on what you're prioritising: reef visibility, safari game viewing, or simply avoiding the rains. Here's how we advise guests planning a trip that blends both.

December – March: Warm, dry, and clear water

The short dry season brings some of the year's best snorkeling visibility, warm temperatures, and reliably dry days for Gede, Marafa and beach excursions. It's also peak season on the coast, so book accommodation and marine slots early.

April – June: The long rains

Kenya's heaviest rains fall in this window. Coastal showers tend to be short, tropical downpours rather than all-day washouts, and this quieter shoulder season brings excellent value and thinner crowds — but it's not our first recommendation for a first-time visitor prioritising guaranteed sunshine.

July – October: Peak safari season, excellent coast weather

Cooler, drier conditions make this the single best window to combine coastal time with an inland safari extension — vegetation inland thins out, concentrating wildlife around rivers and waterholes in Tsavo and Amboseli, while the coast enjoys calm seas and clear skies.

November: The short rains

A brief, usually light rainy spell before the December high season begins — often still swimmable and touring-friendly, with the added benefit of a lush, green landscape.

If we had to pick one all-round window for a first Kenya trip pairing beach and bush, it's late June through October.

Whatever your travel dates, our team tailors the itinerary — including our Coastal Wonders & Tsavo Safari Combo — to the season you're travelling in.
