The Complete Guide to Watamu Marine National Park

Gazetted in 1968, Watamu Marine National Park is one of Kenya's oldest protected marine areas — and one of its most rewarding for snorkelers of any experience level. Its shallow, current-sheltered lagoons make it forgiving for first-timers, while three distinct offshore reef systems reward more adventurous swimmers with drop-offs, swim-throughs and the coast's best odds of a turtle encounter.

When to go

Watamu's water is swimmable year-round, but visibility peaks from December through March and again from July to October, when the northeast and southeast monsoons respectively keep the water calmest and clearest. Aim for a morning outing where possible — the reef is generally quieter and the light is best for underwater photography.

What you'll see

Expect resident green and hawksbill turtles, technicolour parrotfish grazing the coral, moray eels tucked into crevices, and — on good days — eagle rays gliding over the sand channels. The park's coral cover has recovered impressively from the 1998 bleaching event thanks to sustained conservation work, and healthy branching and table corals are once again the norm rather than the exception.

Reef etiquette that actually matters

  • Never stand on or touch coral — even a light brush can kill polyps that took decades to grow.
  • Wear reef-safe, mineral-based sunscreen; chemical filters are linked to coral bleaching.
  • Keep a respectful distance from turtles and rays rather than chasing them for a photo.
  • Take nothing from the reef — shells, coral fragments and starfish all belong exactly where you found them.
The healthiest reefs we snorkel today exist because local guides have protected them for two generations — every respectful visit helps keep it that way.

Our Marine Park Snorkeling Safari visits three sites in a single day with a marine-certified local guide, finishing with a fresh seafood lunch on the beach — the best introduction to this reef we know how to give you.
