Sabaki River Hippo & Crocodile Safari
Where Kenya's longest river meets the Indian Ocean — a wetland safari for hippo pods, basking crocodile and prolific birdlife.
Nature & Birding
Arabuko Sokoke is the largest remaining fragment of the once-vast East African coastal forest, and a globally recognised Important Bird Area protecting several species found almost nowhere else, including the Sokoke scops owl and Clarke's weaver. A local naturalist guide leads you along quiet forest trails in the cool of the morning, listening and looking for the elusive Ader's duiker, golden-rumped elephant shrew and troops of curious colobus monkeys overhead. The walk continues to the neighbouring Mida Creek boardwalk, a raised timber walkway threading out over the mangroves for uninterrupted views of wading birds and crab-plovers on the mudflats at low tide. It's a gentle, rewarding morning for anyone who prefers birdsong to engine noise.
Meet your naturalist guide at the forest gate at first light for a quiet walk along shaded trails, watching and listening for forest birds and primates as the reserve wakes. Continue to the nearby Mida Creek boardwalk for sweeping views across the mangroves and tidal flats, home to herons, storks and migratory waders.
